Why Nuance Loses Online (And What To Do About It)

Context doesn’t fit a one-to-many format, and absolutes make great soundbites.

Giving good health advice to a general audience is nearly impossible — context matters, absolutes rarely help, and audiences are wildly diverse. But context doesn’t fit a one-to-many format, and absolutes make great soundbites. So confident-sounding takes with less scientific grounding tend to win the algorithm, while credentialed experts who know better often stay quiet rather than oversimplify.

A better way to communicate: make the target explicit (“women over 40 who feel tired but wired — this one’s for you”), lead with information over advice, own the “it depends,” and use data visualization to show real ranges instead of collapsing everyone into one average. Nuance is harder to package, but it’s the only version that’s actually true for most people reading it.
