What’s Your Leadville?

The lesson isn’t really about running. It’s about calling your shot deliberately.

David Roche just broke the 19-year-old course record at the Leadville 100 — his first hundred-miler. It looks like it came out of nowhere, but it didn’t. He spent years racing shorter distances in his twenties, then stepped back to coach elite athletes and study endurance science, all while quietly still training. When he returned to racing, he didn’t pick a random goal — he looked at his strengths, his history, and the terrain, and chose a distance and course built for exactly what he’s good at. Then he built the plan: shorter ultras to test himself, targeted training on the race’s biggest climb, a fueling strategy dialed in ahead of time. He hit a bike accident, COVID, a surprise pregnancy, and food poisoning along the way. He stuck with it anyway.

The lesson isn’t really about running. It’s about calling your shot deliberately — matching an audacious goal to your actual strengths and history, then building the unglamorous structure that makes the big swing possible. What’s your Leadville? What’s step one?
