Treat the Symptom Cluster, Not the Symptom

Symptoms rarely show up alone — but healthcare tends to treat one at a time.

Symptoms rarely show up alone — sore throat, runny nose, and cough share a mechanism; so do hot flashes and brain fog. But healthcare tends to treat one symptom at a time, which quickly turns into polypharmacy or an unreasonable list of things to manage separately.

Researchers can now identify “symptom clusters” — groups of symptoms that tend to occur together — and study what treatments help the people who experience them most. More data means better pattern recognition, which means less “try it and see” and more precision. This is exactly the kind of problem AI is well-suited to: finding patterns in data we couldn’t see before, and using them to treat people based on who they actually are. Don’t fear AI in healthcare — use it well.
